The gut bacteria Blautia linked to muscle loss in older Japanese adults living at home

Abstract

Among 744 older Japanese adults, those with reduced muscle mass had significantly higher levels of the genus Blautia.

  • Participants with an appendicular skeletal muscle mass index below 4.4 kg/m² for men and 3.7 kg/m² for women exhibited elevated levels of Blautia compared to those with normal muscle mass.
  • The association between Blautia levels and reduced skeletal muscle mass remained significant after adjusting for various confounding factors.
  • Increased levels of Blautia were positively linked to excessive alcohol consumption of 20 grams or more per day.
  • Regular yogurt intake was negatively associated with Blautia levels, suggesting dietary habits may influence gut microbiota composition.
