Hair Loss Risk and Management in Patients Taking Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists

Updated

Abstract

Evidence suggests a potential association between glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and hair loss, particularly with semaglutide and tirzepatide.

  • Safety signals regarding hair loss with GLP-1RAs have emerged, especially in the USA.
  • The volume of GLP-1RA prescriptions in Europe is increasing, potentially leading to more reported cases of hair loss.
  • Most evidence for the association is derived from pharmacovigilance database analyses and retrospective cohort studies.
  • Causality between GLP-1RAs and hair loss has not been established.
  • Rapid weight loss from GLP-1RAs may be a contributing factor to hair loss through mechanisms like telogen effluvium.
  • Further research is necessary to understand causality, underlying mechanisms, and patient-specific risk factors.
