Haloperidol compared to other older antipsychotics for treating schizophrenia and similar psychotic disorders

Updated

Abstract

The systematic review includes 63 randomized trials with 3675 participants comparing haloperidol to other first-generation antipsychotics.

  • There was no clear evidence of a difference in clinically important response to treatment between haloperidol and other first-generation antipsychotics in short-term studies.
  • In medium-term trials, haloperidol may be less effective than the pooled group of other first-generation antipsychotics, based on one study.
  • Haloperidol is associated with alleviating more positive symptoms of schizophrenia compared to other antipsychotic drugs, according to limited evidence.
  • No statistically significant differences were found in global state, mental state outcomes, or overall acceptability between haloperidol and its comparators.
  • Haloperidol produced less akathisia in the medium term compared to other antipsychotic agents.
