Oral Haloperidol versus Oral Olanzapine for People with Schizophrenia and Related Disorders

Updated

Abstract

A total of 68 studies involving 9132 participants were analyzed to compare haloperidol and olanzapine for treating schizophrenia.

  • There is very low certainty about differences between haloperidol and olanzapine regarding clinically important changes in global state and relapse.
  • Haloperidol may lead to a reduction in overall mental state improvement compared to olanzapine, with one fewer person improving for every eight treated with haloperidol.
  • Haloperidol is associated with a significant increase in extrapyramidal side effects, with one additional person affected for every three treated compared to olanzapine.
  • Evidence suggests that haloperidol may reduce the risk of weight gain compared to olanzapine, with one fewer person experiencing weight increase for every ten treated.
  • Haloperidol may decrease the likelihood of clinically important quality of life improvements, with one fewer person improving for every nine treated.
  • There is a suggestion that haloperidol may increase the rate of early study withdrawals due to adverse effects, impacting one additional person for every 22 treated.
