Greenhouse gas emissions of healthy diets following Dutch food guidelines

Updated

Abstract

Changing the current Dutch diet to one aligned with the Wheel of Five could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 13% for men aged 31-50 years.

  • Omitting meat and choosing foods with low greenhouse gas emissions may lead to reductions in emissions ranging from 28% to 46%.
  • In scenarios with only low GHG emissions foods, fewer dietary reference intakes (DRIs) were met compared to other healthy diet scenarios.
  • All healthy diet scenarios resulted in meeting equal to or greater numbers of DRIs compared to the current Dutch diet.
  • The findings suggest that while adherence to dietary guidelines does not significantly decrease GHG emissions, specific changes could lead to substantial reductions.
