Healthy Sleep Patterns and the Risk of New Heart Rhythm Problems

Updated

Abstract

A healthy sleep pattern is associated with a 29% lower risk of developing atrial fibrillation.

  • Participants with a healthy sleep score of 5 had a 35% lower risk of bradyarrhythmia compared to those with a score of 0-1.
  • The healthy sleep pattern was linked to reduced risks of atrial fibrillation/flutter (HR 0.71) and bradyarrhythmia (HR 0.65).
  • The association between a healthy sleep pattern and reduced risk of atrial fibrillation was stronger in individuals with lower genetic risk.
  • Sleep behaviors such as chronotype, sleep duration, insomnia, snoring, and daytime sleepiness collectively define a healthy sleep pattern.
