Heatwaves may speed up aging by disrupting metabolism

Abstract

Among 2,318 participants, greater heatwave exposure was significantly associated with higher biological age acceleration, with an increase of 0.531 years for each additional heatwave event.

  • Heatwave exposure during the year prior to biological age assessments was linked to increased biological age acceleration.
  • Under the strictest definition of a heatwave, each additional day of exposure corresponded to an increase in biological age acceleration of 0.057 years.
  • Stronger associations with biological age acceleration were observed in individuals with a body mass index of 23 kg/m² or higher, urban residents, and those living in southern or subtropical regions.
  • Heatwave exposure was associated with elevated levels of total cholesterol and glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c).
  • Transcriptomic profiling in aged mice exposed to heatwave conditions revealed 29 differentially expressed genes related to lipid metabolism and insulin resistance.
