Links between mercury levels in body fluids and tissues and diabetes

Abstract

The meta-analysis included 40,891 subjects and found no significant link between mercury exposure and diabetes (OR: 1.11, 95% CI: 0.80, 1.55).

  • Eight studies were included, comprising one case-control, one cohort, and six cross-sectional studies.
  • Two studies were rated as high quality and six as medium quality.
  • In male participants, the pooled odds ratio was 0.71 (95% CI: 0.57, 0.90), while in females it was 1.11 (95% CI: 0.69, 1.79).
  • Sensitivity analysis indicated that the results were stable despite some evidence of publication bias from Egger's test (P=0.013).
  • Further research is needed to explore the relationship between different types of mercury exposure and diabetes risk.
