Blood cancer rates and death linked to diabetes drugs GLP-1 receptor agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors in type 2 diabetes

Updated

Abstract

Essence

In type 2 diabetes records, GLP-1 receptor agonist use was linked to lower multiple myeloma incidence, while SGLT2 inhibitor use was linked to higher mortality in multiple myeloma and AML.

Evidence

A 2019-2024 multicenter retrospective TriNetX cohort found GLP-1 receptor agonists associated with lower multiple myeloma incidence (HR 0.64) but not CML, AML, or MDS, and SGLT2 inhibitors associated with higher mortality in multiple myeloma (HR 2.27) and AML (HR 2.00).

Caveat

Because the study uses observational electronic health records, residual confounding and treatment-selection bias could explain the associations.
