Comparing Stopping or Continuing GLP-1/GIP Drugs Before Upper Endoscopy

Essence

Continuing GLP-1 or GLP-1/GIP agonists before upper endoscopy increased clinically significant residual gastric volume compared with holding one dose.

Evidence

A randomized, single-masked clinical trial at 2 US tertiary centers analyzed 60 adults undergoing elective upper endoscopy while taking stable GLP-1 or GLP-1/GIP agonists.

Caveat

The trial stopped early at an interim analysis, had small subgroups, and found no clinically significant residual gastric volume among patients who also had colonoscopy after a clear-liquid day.
