Leftover stomach contents after stopping glucagon-like peptide-1 drugs before planned surgery

Updated

Abstract

The prevalence of increased residual gastric content was 42% in patients who had discontinued weekly GLP-1 receptor agonists for at least 7 days.

  • Increased residual gastric content was defined as the presence of solid content, thick liquid, or more than 1.5 mL/kg of clear liquid.
  • The unadjusted prevalence of increased residual gastric content was 24% in the control group and 42% in the exposure group.
  • Solid content constituted a significant portion of positive exams, accounting for 80% in the control group and 82% in the exposure group.
  • No statistically significant difference in the prevalence of increased residual gastric content was found between the two groups, both before and after adjusting for confounding factors.
  • The findings suggest that a 7-day discontinuation of weekly GLP-1 receptor agonists may not reliably ensure an empty stomach prior to surgery.
