Hormones from the eyestalk control heart growth in mud crabs

Bilateral eyestalk ablation resulted in a maximum heart growth index of 0.162 in male crabs.

  • Heart growth indices were higher in ablated male crabs compared to control and injected groups.
  • The heart growth index for females was 0.158 after ablation, which is lower than that of males.
  • Males exhibited faster heart growth than females across all experimental conditions.
  • Bilateral eyestalk ablation significantly increased heart growth in males, with minimal impact on females.
