Brain changes in people after their first use of psilocybin

Updated

Abstract

Essence

In psychedelic-naive healthy adults, one 25 mg psilocybin dose was linked to short-term brain changes and one-month gains in flexibility, insight, and well-being.

Evidence

An exploratory placebo-controlled within-subject EEG and MRI study of 28 participants measured brain anatomy and function from 1 hour to 1 month after 25 mg psilocybin versus 1 mg placebo.

Caveat

The sample was small and healthy, enduring functional changes were largely absent, and several well-being links were correlational.
