How a combined website and smartphone app are used for weight management

Updated

Abstract

Access to the POWeR Tracker app was associated with a significant increase in participants' awareness of their eating and physical activity goals.

  • Participants reported an increase in awareness of their eating goals (β1=0.31, P=.04) and physical activity goals (β1=0.28, P=.03) when using POWeR Tracker.
  • The level of increase in goal awareness varied among individual participants.
  • Usage data indicated that participants spent a similar amount of time on the POWeR website whether or not POWeR Tracker was available (mean 29 minutes vs. mean 27 minutes).
  • Participants accessed the POWeR Tracker app primarily in short bursts (mean 3 minutes) during convenient moments.
  • Qualitative feedback revealed that nearly all participants found mobile access to be more convenient than using a computer, though opinions on the app versus website components varied.
