Low oxygen triggers cartilage cells to rebuild with more type II collagen and aggrecan while reducing type I and III collagen through hypoxia-inducible factor 1alpha

Updated

Abstract

Hypoxia and HIF-1alpha significantly induced the expression of SOX9, COL2A1, and aggrecan while inhibiting COL1A1, COL1A2, and COL3A1.

  • HIF-1alpha may play a crucial role in redifferentiating human chondrocytes under low oxygen conditions.
  • The binding of HIF-1alpha to the aggrecan promoter was identified, marking a novel finding in cartilage research.
  • Induction of specific chondrocyte markers can be achieved by manipulating HIF-1alpha levels.
  • This study highlights a bimodal role of HIF-1alpha in maintaining cartilage health and may offer new therapeutic avenues for osteoarthritis.
