Ibogaine's role in treating psychiatric disorders: from single use to step-by-step approaches

Updated

Abstract

A single 1800 mg dose of ibogaine was associated with reduced craving in a pilot study involving 20 cocaine-dependent adults over a follow-up period of up to 24 weeks.

  • Only three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were identified regarding ibogaine and related compounds.
  • Noribogaine doses of 3-60 mg were found to be safe and well-tolerated in a study involving 36 healthy volunteers.
  • In a trial with 27 opioid-dependent patients, noribogaine 60-180 mg caused dose-dependent prolongation of the heart's QT interval.
  • Adverse effects reported include neurologic, psychiatric, and cardiac events, with fatalities occurring in patients with pre-existing medical and substance use conditions.
  • Current microdosing and sequential protocols are experimental and lack standardized definitions, relying only on preliminary observational data.
