Immune response, side effects, and safety of an mRNA flu and COVID-19 combined vaccine in Japanese adults aged 50 and over

Abstract

A total of 2022 participants were randomized to evaluate the immune responses of the mRNA-based vaccine mRNA-1083 against influenza and SARS-CoV-2.

  • mRNA-1083 elicited noninferior immune responses compared to active vaccines for all evaluated influenza strains and SARS-CoV-2 at Day 29.
  • In high-risk participants aged 60 years and older with comorbidities, mRNA-1083 demonstrated noninferiority for comparator-matched influenza strains and SARS-CoV-2.
  • The overall study population showed superior immune responses from mRNA-1083 against comparator-matched influenza strains and SARS-CoV-2.
  • Immune responses remained above baseline levels at Day 181, comparable to or numerically higher than those from active comparators.
  • Most adverse reactions were mild (grade 1 or 2), and there were no cases of myocarditis, pericarditis, or serious adverse events related to the vaccine.
