Shared role of inflammation, tissue breakdown, and cell aging in disc degeneration and osteoarthritis

Abstract

Over 40% of individuals over 60 years have comorbidity between intervertebral disc degenerative disease (IVDD) and osteoarthritis (OA).

  • Age-related inflammation and cellular aging, along with obesity and genetic factors, may contribute to the risk of both IVDD and OA.
  • An imbalance in the extracellular matrix is a key factor in the degeneration processes of both diseases.
  • Inflammatory signals can activate immune responses that further damage tissues and promote cell death.
  • Mechanical stress can worsen the effects of degeneration through specific cellular signaling pathways.
  • Differences exist between IVDD and OA in terms of nutrient supply, herniation types, and the underlying causes across different joints.
  • Future research could focus on integrated approaches for diagnosis and treatment that address both conditions simultaneously.
