Tracking flu-like illness using wearable sensors and patient reports

Abstract

A total of 2435 participants with influenza-like illness (ILI) showed significant changes in wearable sensor data compared to healthy days.

  • Participants with ILI had reduced total daily steps, active time, and sleep efficiency.
  • Increased sleep duration and resting heart rate were observed in those with ILI.
  • Changes in wearable sensor data often began before symptom onset.
  • Participants seeking health care exhibited greater deviations from baseline than those who did not.
  • Individuals testing positive for influenza had more pronounced changes compared to those with ILI symptoms only.
  • Wearable sensor data correlated with patient-reported outcomes during ILI events.
