Using wearable device data to track flu-like illness in real time across US states

Abstract

Over 13.3 million total resting heart rate and sleep measures were collected from 47,249 Fitbit users across five states.

  • Fitbit data significantly improved predictions of influenza-like illness (ILI) rates in all five states studied.
  • The average increase in correlation with CDC-reported ILI rates was 0.12, indicating an improvement of 6.3-32.9%.
  • Correlations between the final models and CDC ILI rates varied from 0.84 to 0.97.
  • Week-to-week changes in the number of Fitbit users showing abnormal data were associated with similar changes in ILI rates.
