Insomnia and Sleep Length in Adults with ADHD: Findings from a Population Study

In a study of 4,618 adults, 43% with clinically relevant ADHD symptoms reported significant insomnia symptoms.

  • 41% of adults with clinically relevant ADHD symptoms experienced short sleep duration, defined as ≤ 6 hours.
  • 6% reported long sleep duration, defined as ≥ 10 hours.
  • Increased inattention symptoms were linked to higher likelihoods of insomnia symptoms and both short and long sleep duration.
  • Higher hyperactivity symptoms were associated with insomnia symptoms and short sleep duration.
