Bone healing improved by stem cells that produce more anti-inflammatory signals delivered in soft gel scaffolds in a mouse bone injury model

Updated

Abstract

IL-4 MSCs within macroporous gelatin-based scaffolds enhanced bone formation in mice with critical-size long bone defects.

  • IL-4 MSCs increased the expression of M2 markers, indicating a shift towards tissue regeneration.
  • M1 marker expression was not inhibited during the early phase, suggesting a balanced immune response.
  • Enhanced macrophage migration into the scaffold was observed, which may support healing.
  • Bone formation was significantly improved six weeks after treatment with IL-4 MSCs.
  • IL-4 MSCs may provide a promising approach for treating critical-size long bone defects.
