Intermittent fasting and weight loss in night shift workers: a three-group randomized trial

Updated

Abstract

A total of 250 night shift workers were randomized to test two modified intermittent fasting strategies against continuous energy restriction.

  • No significant differences in body weight were observed between the modified intermittent fasting strategies and continuous energy restriction after 24 weeks.
  • Insulin resistance, measured by HOMA-IR, showed no significant differences among the groups at 24 weeks.
  • Participants in the IF:2D group experienced lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol compared to those in the continuous energy restriction group.
  • Favorable changes in body weight, insulin resistance, body composition, blood pressure, and cardiometabolic markers were noted within all groups among those who completed the trial.
  • No serious trial-related adverse events were reported throughout the study.
