Online Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia with Chronic Pain: A Randomized Trial

Updated

Abstract

Among 54 patients with chronic pain, internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (ICBT-i) resulted in significant immediate improvements in insomnia severity.

  • ICBT-i demonstrated a significant interaction effect on insomnia severity and sleep parameters compared to applied relaxation.
  • Improvements in sleep efficiency, sleep onset latency, early morning awakenings, and wake time after sleep onset were observed with ICBT-i.
  • Both groups showed a time effect for anxiety and depression at the 6-month follow-up, but no significant changes were noted in pain-related parameters.
  • At the 6-month follow-up, sleep parameters were similar between ICBT-i and applied relaxation groups.
  • Increased stress was the most frequently reported negative effect for both treatment arms.
