Ways to improve movement after hip fracture surgery in adults

Abstract

A total of 40 randomized controlled trials involving 4059 participants evaluated mobility interventions after hip fracture surgery.

  • Mobility strategies may lead to a moderate increase in mobility (standardized mean difference 0.53) and a small improvement in walking speed (standardized mean difference 0.16) in hospital settings.
  • In the post-hospital setting, mobility strategies result in a small increase in mobility (standardized mean difference 0.32) and walking speed (standardized mean difference 0.16).
  • There is little or no difference in short-term or long-term mortality rates associated with mobility strategies compared to usual care.
  • Training focused on gait, balance, and functional exercises is likely to provide a moderate improvement in mobility (standardized mean difference 0.57).
  • Resistance or strength training may lead to a clinically meaningful increase in mobility measured by distance walked in six minutes (mean difference 55.65).
  • Future research should explore the long-term effects and economic outcomes of these interventions.
