Exercise to help older adults living at home avoid falls

Updated

Abstract

Exercise reduces the rate of falls in older people living in the community by 23%.

  • A total of 108 randomized controlled trials with 23,407 participants were included in the analysis.
  • Exercise was associated with a reduction of 195 fewer falls per 1,000 people followed over one year.
  • The rate of individuals experiencing one or more falls decreased by 15%, equating to 72 fewer fallers per 1,000 people over a year.
  • Balance and functional exercises reduced the rate of falls by 24% and the number of people experiencing falls by 13%.
  • Multiple types of exercise, including balance and functional plus resistance exercises, probably reduced the rate of falls by 34%.
  • Tai Chi may reduce the rate of falls by 19%, but effects of resistance training alone or other types of exercise remain uncertain.
