Home and Outdoor Changes to Help Prevent Falls in Older Adults Living Independently

Updated

Abstract

Home fall-hazard interventions probably reduce the overall rate of falls by 26% among older adults at higher risk.

  • A reduction of 38% in falls is observed in targeted individuals with a history of falls.
  • No significant reduction in falls is noted for individuals not selected based on fall risk.
  • These interventions probably lead to an 11% decrease in the overall risk of experiencing one or more falls.
  • There is little evidence that vision improvement interventions affect the rate of falls or the number of fallers.
  • Education interventions for reducing home fall hazards show uncertain effects on fall rates and related injuries.
  • Home modifications have not been studied for their impact on falls, limiting conclusions in that area.
