Updated

Abstract

A total of 79,193 participants were included in the analysis of fall prevention interventions for older adults living in the community.

  • Multiple-component group exercise significantly reduced both the rate of falls and the risk of falling.
  • Home safety assessment and modification interventions effectively decreased both the rate of falls and the risk of falling.
  • Vitamin D supplementation did not reduce falls overall but may be effective in individuals with lower vitamin D levels prior to treatment.
  • Tai Chi was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of falling, although the reduction in the rate of falls approached significance.
  • An intervention for vision problems led to an increased rate of falls and risk of falling.
  • Gradual withdrawal of psychotropic medication was linked to a significant reduction in the rate of falls.
