Ways to prevent falls in older adults living in care homes and hospitals

Updated

Abstract

This update includes 95 trials with 138,164 participants assessing fall prevention interventions in older adults.

  • Exercise may have little effect on the rate of falls and risk of falling in care facilities.
  • General medication review is associated with little or no difference in falls outcomes.
  • Vitamin D supplementation probably reduces the rate of falls but not the overall risk of falling.
  • Multifactorial interventions show uncertainty regarding their effect on falls rates and risk in care facilities.
  • In hospitals, additional physiotherapy and bed sensor alarms have uncertain impacts on fall rates and risk.
  • Multifactorial interventions may reduce the rate of falls in hospitals, particularly in subacute settings.
