Ways to prevent delirium in adults in intensive care

Updated

Abstract

A total of 12 randomized controlled trials involving 3885 participants were assessed to evaluate interventions for preventing ICU delirium.

  • Haloperidol compared to placebo showed no significant difference in the event rate of ICU delirium (risk ratio 1.01) or in-hospital mortality (risk ratio 0.98).
  • The number of delirium- and coma-free days and ventilator-free days did not show significant improvement with haloperidol compared to placebo.
  • Physical and cognitive therapy interventions did not demonstrate a significant impact on in-hospital mortality or the number of delirium- and coma-free days.
  • Evidence regarding the effectiveness of various pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for preventing ICU delirium remains unclear and requires further investigation.
