Ways to Prevent Obesity in Children

Updated

Abstract

Moderate-certainty evidence from 16 randomized controlled trials indicates that diet combined with physical activity interventions reduces BMI in children aged 0 to 5 years.

  • In children aged 0-5 years, diet alone or physical activity alone did not significantly reduce BMI or zBMI.
  • For children aged 6 to 12 years, physical activity interventions were associated with a BMI reduction, but had little effect on zBMI.
  • Diet combined with physical activity interventions showed low-certainty evidence of reducing zBMI in children aged 6 to 12 years.
  • In adolescents aged 13 to 18 years, physical activity interventions may reduce BMI, but evidence is of very low certainty.
  • No effective outcomes were observed from diet-only interventions in children aged 6-18 years.
  • The interventions studied generally did not result in adverse effects or increase health inequalities.
