Frontal brain wave patterns during surgery linked to delirium after heart surgery

Updated

Abstract

Sixty-five (29.5%) of 220 patients developed postoperative delirium (POD) after cardiac surgery.

  • Delirious patients had a median age of 74 years compared to 67 years for non-delirious patients.
  • Lower pre-operative cognitive scores were observed in patients who developed POD (-0.52 vs. 0.21).
  • Mean α power during surgery was significantly lower in patients who experienced POD (-14.03 dB vs. -11.59 dB).
  • Higher intra-operative mean α power is associated with a reduced probability of developing POD (adjusted odds ratio of 0.88).
  • The relationship between α power and POD risk is independent of age but not when cognitive status is included.
