Natural Daily Rhythms in the Spinal Cord and Sensory Nerve Clusters

Updated

Abstract

Circadian analysis identified 626 rhythmic transcripts within the dorsal root ganglia, representing 3.6% of expressed genes.

  • The spinal dorsal horn and dorsal root ganglia contain autonomous circadian clocks that regulate sensory processing.
  • Sustained oscillations of the core clock protein PER2 were observed, indicating intrinsic timing within these tissues.
  • Rhythmic transcripts displayed non-uniform phase distributions, suggesting distinct molecular programs active at different times of day.
  • Functional analysis showed phase-specific enrichment of processes related to transport, neuronal structure, and protein maintenance.
  • Limited overlap was found between circadian genes and those associated with neuropathic pain, although some aligned with regenerative functions.
  • Baseline circadian modulation was noted for potassium channel-related signaling components linked to neuropathic pain.
