Possible link between tirzepatide use and reduced blood flow causing colon inflammation

Updated

Abstract

A 63-year-old female patient experienced severe abdominal pain and hypotension shortly after receiving a tirzepatide injection.

  • The patient had a history of ischemic colitis and developed acute symptoms including cramping and diaphoresis.
  • Laboratory tests indicated leukocytosis and lactic acidosis, while CT scans showed findings consistent with ischemic colitis.
  • Her condition deteriorated to hypovolemic shock and acute kidney injury, necessitating ICU admission and surgical intervention.
  • Surgical pathology confirmed patchy mucosal necrosis consistent with ischemic colitis.
  • There may be a potential association between tirzepatide use and ischemic colitis in patients with preexisting risk factors.
