Circadian rhythms in Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 regulate the spatial organization of transcriptional and translational machinery.

  • RNA polymerases colocalize with DNA in both diffuse and compacted states.
  • Ribosomes colocalize with diffuse DNA but shift towards thylakoid membrane regions during DNA compaction.
  • The observed localization patterns persist under continuous light and dark conditions.
  • These dynamics remain stable even after transcriptional or translational inhibition within the tested time window.
  • A functional KaiC protein is required for the rhythmic localization patterns.
