Possible ketamine addiction after one low-dose treatment for sudden suicidal thoughts in a patient with multiple mental illnesses: case report

Updated

Abstract

Essence

A single controlled intranasal ketamine dose was followed by illicit ketamine seeking, escalation, and relapse in one psychiatrically multimorbid patient.

Evidence

A single-patient case report describes a 25-year-old woman treated with sub-anaesthetic intranasal ketamine for acute suicidality and her subsequent ketamine, cocaine, and 3-MMC misuse course.

Caveat

A case report cannot estimate how often addiction follows ketamine treatment or separate ketamine exposure from patient-specific psychiatric and substance-use vulnerabilities.
