Ketamine's effects on suicidal thoughts in adults with mental health disorders

Updated

Abstract

At 4 hours post-infusion, ketamine was associated with a significant reduction in suicidal ideation scores, with a standardized mean difference of -0.51.

  • Ketamine administration involved a single intravenous infusion of 0.5 mg/kg over 30 to 45 minutes.
  • The reduction in suicidal ideation scores persisted until 72 hours post-infusion.
  • Standardized mean differences indicated significant reductions at various time points: -0.63 between 12 and 24 hours, and -0.57 between 24 and 72 hours.
  • The evidence for the effectiveness of ketamine was rated as moderate to low.
  • There was considerable variability in results across the trials.
  • Only one trial of esketamine showed marginal effects on suicidal ideation, with limited data on actual suicidal behavior.
