Kidney health with GLP-1 drugs in people with type 2 diabetes already taking SGLT2 inhibitors

Abstract

Kidney disease progression occurred in 0.9% of individuals who initiated GLP-1 receptor agonists compared to 1.4% for those who started DPP-4 inhibitors or sulfonylureas.

  • Initiation of GLP-1 receptor agonists is associated with a lower risk of kidney disease progression compared to DPP-4 inhibitors or sulfonylureas (HR 0.73).
  • The majority of individuals in the study were male (60%) with a median age of 60 years.
  • No significant difference in the occurrence of acute pancreatitis was observed between the two treatment groups.
  • The occurrence of incident diabetic retinopathy was similar for both treatment groups.
