Reversing Gastric Bypass and Adding Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery to Treat Persistent Low Blood Sugar

Updated

Abstract

The operative time for the laparoscopic conversion of a gastric bypass to a sleeve gastrectomy was 245 minutes.

  • A 52-year-old woman experienced severe hypoglycemia following multiple gastric bypass surgeries, with symptoms consistent with Whipple's triad.
  • Oral glucose tolerance tests indicated low glucose levels at 2 hours (2.7 mmol/l) and 3 hours (3.3 mmol/l).
  • Despite medical management with sitagliptin and dietary changes, the patient remained symptomatic and sought surgical intervention.
  • The surgery resulted in no intra-operative or post-operative complications, and the patient achieved normoglycemia 11 months post-procedure.
  • Her fasting blood sugar was recorded at 4.4 mmol/l, and she is currently free of symptoms.
