Lead exposure alters sugar and amino acid metabolism linked to changes in the gut bacteria and brain communication in mice

Updated

Abstract

Essence

In mice, chronic lead exposure was linked to cognitive decline, brain and gut inflammation, and altered gut-brain-axis metabolism.

Evidence

This was a mouse exposure study combining behavioral, morphological, metabolome, and metagenome analyses across brain, feces, serum, and gut microbiota.

Caveat

The findings are preclinical and largely correlative across microbial taxa, metabolic shifts, and brain amino acid changes, so they do not establish the same mechanism or health impact in humans.
