Leptin, NPY, melatonin, and zinc levels in low and high thyroid hormone conditions and their link to melatonin and the pineal gland

Updated

Abstract

Zinc levels decreased in hypothyroid rats and increased in hyperthyroid rats.

  • Thyroid hormones TSH, FT3, FT4, TT3, and TT4 decreased in hypothyroid groups and increased in hyperthyroid groups.
  • Melatonin levels rose in hyperthyroid rats and fell in hypothyroid rats.
  • Leptin and neuropeptide Y (NPY) levels increased in both hypothyroid and hyperthyroid conditions.
  • Melatonin supplementation and pinealectomy did not significantly influence changes in leptin, NPY, and zinc levels in thyroid dysfunction.
