Nighttime Light Exposure and Risk of Heart and Blood Vessel Diseases

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Brighter nighttime light exposure was linked to higher incidence of several cardiovascular diseases in UK Biobank adults.

Evidence

A prospective cohort study of 88,905 UK Biobank participants used 1 week of wrist-sensor light data and 9.5 years of NHS records, finding brightest-night exposure associated with aHRs of 1.28 to 1.56 across stroke, coronary disease, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation.

Caveat

The study is observational and measured light for only 1 week, so residual confounding and longer-term exposure changes remain possible.
