Light pollution in the wild affects adult reef fish and their offspring across generations

Abstract

Artificial light at night is associated with enhanced adult growth but reduced reproductive hormone levels in the coral reef anemonefish.

  • Artificial light at night did not change reproductive traits such as fecundity.
  • Offspring exhibited reduced embryonic heart rate and yolk sac size when exposed to artificial light.
  • Larval escape responses and swimming performance were significantly diminished in offspring.
  • This study is the first to document both direct and intergenerational effects of artificial light at night in a wild marine organism.
  • These findings suggest potential challenges for larval recruitment and population replenishment in reef fish.
