The current role of light therapy in medicine

Updated

Abstract

Robust clinical evidence supports bright light therapy for seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and UV-B for psoriasis.

  • Light therapy includes a variety of clinical and experimental applications.
  • Ocular exposure to bright light influences mood and sleep through the circadian system.
  • Peripheral photobiomodulation and ultraviolet phototherapy promote local tissue healing.
  • Mitochondrial activation is a proposed mechanism, varying by therapy type and context.
  • Bright light therapy shows promise for delirium, but large-scale trials are needed.
  • Many other uses of light therapy are primarily backed by preclinical studies.
