Liraglutide's effects on metabolism and fertility in women with polycystic ovary syndrome

Updated

Abstract

Liraglutide significantly increased menstrual frequency (g = 1.76) and reduced body mass index (BMI; g = -0.52) in overweight or obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

  • Liraglutide improved insulin resistance, with a reduction in the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (g = -0.52).
  • Treatment was associated with lower levels of luteinizing hormone and free androgen index, along with a modest increase in sex hormone-binding globulin.
  • Heterogeneity was high for the outcome of menstrual frequency.
  • Reproductive outcomes like ovulation and pregnancy could not be analyzed due to insufficient reporting.
  • Liraglutide was generally well tolerated, with adverse events primarily consisting of mild gastrointestinal symptoms.
  • Further research is needed to confirm its reproductive efficacy and safety profile.
