Lithium added to radioiodine treatment for thyroid cancer: patient outcomes and lab studies

Updated

Abstract

In a clinical study of 12 patients with metastatic differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC), the addition of lithium carbonate did not demonstrate any beneficial effects on clinical outcomes.

  • Increased radioactive iodine (RaI) uptake was observed in seven patients after lithium treatment.
  • No improvement in serum thyroglobulin (Tg) levels or radiological dimensions of metastases was noted with RaI plus lithium compared to control.
  • In vitro studies showed no effects of lithium chloride on iodide uptake or efflux in thyroid cell lines.
  • The clinical value of lithium in the treatment of DTC remains uncertain.
