How Common and Disruptive Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome Is in People with Severe Long COVID Symptoms

Updated

Abstract

In a group of 467 patients with long COVID, 31% were found to have postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).

  • POTS affected younger patients (mean age 40.0 years) compared to those without POTS (mean ages 44.0 and 47.0 years).
  • A majority of POTS patients were female (91%).
  • Patients with POTS had lower physical activity levels than those without POTS.
  • Heart rates during a 6-minute walk test were higher in the POTS group, with a shorter walking distance (448 m) compared to others.
  • Symptoms were similar across all groups, indicating overlapping symptoms.
  • POTS in long COVID may lead to decreased physical activity and should be evaluated regularly.
