Longer Sleep Predicts Development of Bipolar or Psychotic Disorders in Young People Using Early Mental Health Care

Updated

Abstract

This clinical cohort study examined the role of actigraphy-derived sleep-wake and circadian rhythm disturbances in predicting mental disorders in youth.

  • Sleep duration, timing, and efficiency may serve as indicators for the transition to full-threshold mental disorders in youth.
  • The study focused on predicting specific transitions to bipolar or psychotic disorders.
  • Other transitions to full-threshold depressive or anxiety disorders were also assessed.
  • Limited longitudinal studies using objective measures highlight the need for further investigation in this area.
