Small Peptides from Housefly Larvae May Relieve Diarrhea-Predominant IBS with Depression by Changing Gut Bacteria, Short-Chain Fatty Acids, and Blood Metabolism

Abstract

Low-molecular-weight peptides from Musca domestica larvae may alleviate diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome combined with depression.

  • Chronic-acute combined stress in rats induced typical symptoms of comorbid IBS-D and depression.
  • Treatment with low-molecular-weight peptides resulted in effects similar to a known medication, trimebutine maleate.
  • LMWP treatment reshaped the gut microbiota and restored metabolic pathways.
  • Changes included alterations in 27 disease-associated serum metabolites and increased levels of fecal short-chain fatty acids.
  • Therapeutic benefits may involve interactions among gut microbiota, short-chain fatty acids, and tryptophan metabolites.
