Low protein diets in adults without diabetes who have long-term kidney disease

Updated

Abstract

2996 participants were analyzed across 17 studies evaluating low protein diets in chronic kidney disease (CKD).

  • A very low protein diet is probably associated with a reduction in the number of individuals with CKD who progress to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD).
  • Low protein diets may have little effect on the progression to ESKD compared to normal protein diets.
  • There is probably no significant impact of low or very low protein diets on mortality rates among participants.
  • Data on adverse effects, such as changes in body weight and protein energy wasting, are limited and uncertain.
  • Quality of life was not assessed in any of the studies reviewed.
